OIT IP Segmentation Plan (2005) This project will restructure Boise State's IP address range into smaller manageable pools. This will allow for a more stable network and the ability to provide greater security. When a problem arises on any network segment (pool), this will limit the number of machines affected by the problem. All network pools will be available 2 weeks prior to the scheduled date of change for any given building except those in red (PLEASE SEE NOTE BELOW). This will allow for continued operation in parallel and limit the amount of work that will be required to make all necessary changes in one given day. The day a building is listed on the calendar is the day that it will be rolled over to its new network segment. Old IPs for that building will no longer be available. Dates vary for PUBLIC and PRIVATE segment rollovers for each building. In general, the day a building is scheduled to be changed, users can expect to experience approximately 30 minutes of network downtime between the hours of 6:00am and 10:00am. This project will take place between the months of May and August. The below linked calendar shows these these months with the scheduled dates for each building. The number in parenthesis (ie, 112.x) indicates the new pool of those buildings. For all Boise State IP addresses, the first two numbers separated by a decimal (132.178.) will never change. The third number is the pool/network segment number. And the fourth number is the number assigned to the machine. All static IP address changes must be requested via email to Jason Smart (jsmart@boisestate.edu ) as a Microsoft Excel attachment. The only information needed for the attachment is the existing DNS name and IP for that name. The new IP, mask, and gateway will be added to the Excel spreadsheet in a reply to the email. DHCP addresses will be reassigned for each building on its scheduled conversion date (see Calendar link below). It may be necessary to reboot a machine once the conversion has taken place for the machine to be active on the network again. The machine will automatically be reassigned the new IP at this time.
Please address any concerns or questions to your Network Administrator. |
